| Surrounded
by industrial areas that have been enjoying an economic
boom over the past few years, north Etobcioke has
the potential to become a magnet for growth through
the maximization of its assets and provide its residents
with a variety of employment opportunities. Yet
there is a significant discrepancy that exists between
the thriving business sector and the people who
live in the area.
The Labour Market Emergence
Initiative (LMEI) is a project funded by the Government
of Ontario through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The main goal of the project is to
develop a more vibrant employment and economic
development sector in north Etobicoke, which maximizes
the strength and assets of its residents, businesses,
environment and external partners.
Specifically, through the LMEI Project, NERP
works on gathering current information on labour
market trends and disseminating the information
to local residents. Also, NERP wants to improve
the employment opportunities of local residents,
connect local employers to skilled workers through the non-profit employment service sector and support local business/industry associations and business improvement areas.
The main components of the LMEI project at this
time are:
|
- an Employer
Cluster Capacity Study which identifies the
economic and labour force growth areas, and
the human resources and training needs of employers
in north Etobicoke;

- this
website and an e-bulletin which provides current
information to local employers and residents
on employment and economic development issues;
- a community
workshop series in late October and early November
2005 for local residents to learn about the
results of the cluster study and various training
and employment opportunities in different sectors;
- a
one-day Community Economic Development (CED)
Conference on November 24, 2005 which brings
together employers, residents, service providers
and education/training deliverers to discuss
strategies to develop a vibrant employment and
economic development sector in the community;
- an
action plan for NERP, based on the results of
the above activities, will be produced in December.
